Middle School

Sorell Middle School

At Sorell School we use the Middle School structure to address the specific needs of early adolescence. We aim to encourage and empower young people to explore their developing independence and the opportunities available to them in the world around them in an environment where they are safe, supported and have strong relationships with a core group of teachers.

Middle School Structures:

Our Middle School will operate from grade 6 to grade 8 under the leadership of an Assistant Principal.

Middle School Assistant Principal: Mr Nick De Tarczynski

Grade 7 Coordinator: Mrs Mel Symmons

Students work in standalone classes in grades 6, 7 and 8. Each class has a home group teacher who covers core areas. Specialist teachers work across the grade to enable positive relationships to be developed for future years. Some classes share specialist teachers. The majority of your child’s time is spend with their home group teacher to minimise disruptions, transition periods and ensure strong, positive relationships are formed. In the middle school every student is well known and cared for by their pastoral/Home Group Teacher.

We offer one-to-one devices to enable students to work with the latest technology in class. These devices are supported by on-site IT staff and are stored securely at school. Students are welcome to bring their own device to school, providing it meets the requirements for classwork. To support a positive and productive learning environment, Sorell School enforces a strict ‘No Phones in Class’ policy.

Grades 6 to 8 are housed in the northern classrooms of the secondary campus and have access to “safe” space for break times. There is a Middle School playground that can only be accessed by grade 6 and 7 students.

Camps are an important team building experience in allowing students to work together in an environment outside of the classroom.

Grade 7 typically to go WOODFIELD Adventure Park in cabin style accommodation.

Grade 8 have previously been to Fortescue Bay and Bruny Island and choose tent accommodation.
