Principal’s welcome

Welcome to Sorell School, a K-10 school of around 750 students which has served the historic district of Sorell in southern Tasmania for almost 100 years. Established in 1821, Sorell School will reach its bicentenary in less than 10 years, and we are proud to have served our local community with a fine educational record for such a long period of time.
Towards the end of 2012 we undertook a review of the school’s vision and values. Our new values are represented by the acronym, RIPE, which stands for respect, inclusiveness, pride and excellence. At Sorell School we are RIPE for change, we are RIPE for success and we work consistently together to RIPEn the learning experiences provided for our students.
Our school vision is focused firmly on student achievement and social skills. At Sorell School we aim to work as a community of learners where everyone is supported and challenged to achieve their personal best. We believe in the ability of our students to be confident, life-long learners - literate, numerate, active, healthy and engaged. We want everyone to realise that they can make a difference, both in their own lives and in the lives of others. We aim for our students to leave the school as proud, successful and socially responsible citizens, ready to take on the challenges of life in the twenty first century.
We have a dedicated, experienced and very stable staff group who work together across the school to achieve the school’s vision for all students. We maintain good results in national testing and Australian Curriculum outcomes.

Our learning programs are enhanced by a number of very different possibilities for students. Because of the history of our school and local community, the school’s primary History program is enhanced by the Pioneer Village, which has been developed over a number of years by the enthusiasm of one of our primary staff members. The school’s farm continues to maintain both a horticultural and animal husbandry focus. The primary kitchen garden program, the exceptional poultry breeding program, the newly constructed Trade Training Centre which will provide Certificate courses in Horticulture and Hospitality in 2014, all reflect our focus as an excellent school in a rural community. Sorell Spirit Cheer Team, which has been operating for a number of years, is one of the most successful school cheer teams in the nation and consistently wins awards and accolades at the National Championships. Our website will provide you with opportunities to read about both the group and the individual successes of our students.

I’m very proud to be able to provide you with snapshots of the wonderful things that happen at Sorell School. If you have any enquiries about the information provided or wish to talk to us about enrolling, please contact us.
